When a student hears Torah from his rav and his own will becomes nullified before the will of the rav, by this he knows that he has truly heard; for if his will is not nullified, then even though he hears, he does not hear.

Also, when his own sensations are nullified while he is listening, he may likewise know that he is hearing.
